chilean red wine
  1. Cabernet Sauvignon: Most widely planted red wine grape variety in Chile. And it produces full-bodied wines with flavors of black currant, blackberry, and cassis.
  2. Carmenere: CHILE’s SIGNATURE GRAPE. Originally from Bordeaux, France, it was thought to be extinct until it was rediscovered in Chile in the 1990s. So now, it produces wines with a deep, dark color and flavors of dark fruit, spice, and tobacco.
  3. Merlot: A popular grape variety in Chile, where it is often used as a blending grape. It produces soft, fruity wines with flavors of plum, cherry, and chocolate.
  4. Syrah: A grape variety that produces bold, full-bodied wines with flavors of blackberry, blueberry, and spice. In Australia, its known as Shiraz.
  5. Pinot Noir: Notoriously difficult to grow, but Chile’s cool climate regions have proven to be well-suited for it. However, Chilean Pinot Noir is typically lighter in style than Pinot Noirs from other regions, with flavors of red fruit and earthy notes.
  6. Malbec: A grape variety that is most commonly associated with Argentina, but it’s also grown in Chile. In addition, Chilean Malbec is full-bodied with flavors of blackberry, plum, and chocolate.
  7. Pais: A red wine grape variety that is primarily grown in Chile, where it is also known as “Mission” or “Criolla”. It’s a hardy, high-yielding grape that is resistant to disease and drought, making it well-suited for cultivation in the hot, dry climate of central Chile. Generally, today its used in jug wine.

In addition, other red wine varietals grown in Chile include Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, and Carignan.
