If you have given or been given a bottle of wine before, it’s likely that you have come across Decoy Cabernet Sauvignon.
I believe I have been given at least ten (10) bottles of this Cabernet Sauvignon as a gift!
Decoy Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the most popular and accessible red wines on the market today. It is made by Duckhorn Wine Company, a winery that is based in California.
Decoy Cabernet Sauvignon comes in two different types: California and Limited Napa Valley.
Today, we are going to review both types and give our opinion on which one is better. We will also provide tasting notes so that you can get an idea of what this wine tastes like.
Finally, we will tell you where you can buy Decoy Cabernet Sauvignon online.
Decoy Cabernet Sauvignon is made by Duckhorn Wine Company. Dan and Margaret Duckhorn started Duckhorn Wine Company in 1976, establishing it as one of North America’s best premium Napa Valley wineries.
Decoy, founded in 1985, is known for producing affordably priced wines from superior vineyard regions. Their motto is “The Everyday Wine for the Well-Informed.”
Both are aged in French oak, one is produced with grapes in California and the other with grapes from Napa Valley.
Retail Price: $25 | Varietals: 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot
The Decoy California Cabernet Sauvignon is a cheaper, more accessible option. The grapes are from vineyards all over California (45% Sonoma County, 40% Central Coast, 15% Mendocino County).
Retail Price: $30 | Varietals: 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Merlot
Just introduced this wine in 2020. Made with grapes from highly-rated Napa Valley vineyards, including their own.
I tasted the 2019 vintage of Decoy Cabernet Sauvignon. Overall, this California Cabernet is a solid red wine with lots of vibrant fruit and oak flavors. However, I do believe it to be on the lighter side for a California Cabernet Sauvignon.
But for around $20 that I may get just about anywhere (while grocery shopping or at any wine shop), it’s a decent choice that will satisfy most people’s preferences for a CA red wine.
I get aromas of young red fruits and blueberries (and other blue fruit) with a balanced acidity. On the palate, I get flavors of ripe plum, blueberry, blackberry, and cherry with hints of oak, vanilla, and kind of a lingering sweet spice.
The Limited Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon tasted better to me than the California Cabernet. It’s an elegant, smooth wine with rich flavors of dark fruit, chocolate, and oak with hints of leather.
Just like the label says it is limited but if you can find it at the right price (~$20-25), its definitely a good choice the next time you are at the supermarket/wine store. This is a wine that both novice and wine enthusiast drinkers will enjoy.
A balanced Cabernet Sauvignon displays dark fruit aromas of blackberry, black currant, black cherry, with hints of spice and earth. The flavors of blackberries, black cherries, violet, dark chocolate, and leather with a lingering finish.

You can buy both wines from most wine stores or even some grocery stores. But one of the best places is online on Vivino. Both currently under $20-25.
Yes, Decoy is a good wine brand. Decoy was founded in 1985 and is known for producing affordably priced wines from superior vineyard regions.
No, Decoy Cabernet Sauvignon is not sweet. Although Decoy Cabernet Sauvignon has lush fruit flavors and notes of sweet baking spices, it is a dry red wine.
Decoy wines are affordably priced, however, they are not cheap wines.
Decoy wine is a premium Napa Valley/California wine. Decoy produces both red, white, and sparkling wines. Now, they even produce premium seltzers in cans.
